The Banko Yaki Konro Grill is a handmade, compact charcoal grill with a variety of uses, including traditional grilling and yakitori grilling as well.
With a long rectangular shape, the ceramic grill includes the outer body, which is glazed black and holds a shallow amount of water while cooking. The white, inner ceramic tray holds the charcoal for grilling. A unique feature of this konro grill is the inner tray is designed to be placed over a gas stove while the charcoal is being prepared. Once ready, the inner tray can be returned and used.
Banko-yaki refers to a traditional Japanese pottery style and type of clay, which originated around Mie Prefecture in the 18th century. The clay is known for its durability and heat resistance, making it ideal for cook and grilling.
The compact size of the grill is especially useful because very little charcoal is needed. The wire screen offers a grilling surface that is roughly 32cm x 16cm. Additionally, the konro grill easily accommodates yakitori grilling by removing the wire screen and using the outer body as support for the skewers. The grill also includes a wooden trivet, which keeps the grill in place and prevents unwanted hot spots.
Located in Mie Prefecture, Misuzu Pottery Co manufactures a wide variety of heat-resistant cookware and tableware. Their attention to detail, quality and value of traditional techniques is well recognized.
