Used since ancient times, a bonzaru, or woven bamboo strainer, is used in preparation or presentation of a meal. The natural qualities of bamboo make it excellent for the kitchen, as it can absorb water yet dry fast, making it quite sanitary.
Bonzaru from this line are handmade in Sado, a Japanese island located in Niigata Prefecture. Sado is famous for bamboo craft, as some of the highest quality bamboo is harvested there.
Bonzaru is a classic example of Takezaiku: Japanese bamboo crafting, a useful and sturdy craft that is much less popular today, yet widely admired for its function and beauty.
Bonzaru works particularly well in the kitchen for draining, drying and presenting ingredients. For example, when preparing rice, after you rinse, draining the rice on a zaru for about 30 minutes will significantly improve the quality of your rice.
